THE consumer watchdog has taken legal action against budget airline AirAsia for allegedly failing to disclose the full price of fares for flights from Australia to destinations overseas.

The same day AirAsia executives were spruiking launch fares as low as $99 for one-way flights on its new route from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, it has emerged that the regulator began legal proceedings in Melbourne seeking both penalties and orders for the Malaysian airline to issue corrective notices on its website.

In documents filed in the Federal Court on Tuesday, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission claims that fares sold on the airline's website disclosed only part of the total price for flights from Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Perth to destinations in Asia, Europe and India because they excluded taxes, fees and other charges.

The regulator wants the court to order the airline to publish on its website a notice stating that it failed to ''specify, in a prominent way, the single price for air travel on its website … since at least September''.

The ACCC has shown a growing willingness to take action against airlines for running foul of consumer laws.

Last year it pursued budget airline Tiger Airways for selling tickets after the air-safety regulator had grounded its fleet of aircraft in July due to safety concerns.

The regulator also took Qantas to task for the amount of compensation it offered passengers disrupted by its decision to ground its entire fleet on October 29.

Malaysia Census: Population hits 27.5m mark

By Yow Hong Chieh | Dec 22, 2011 - PUTRAJAYA, Dec 22 — Malaysia’s population has increased to 27.5 million last year from 22.2 million in 2000, according to the latest census by the Statistics Department.

Malays were the largest ethnic group in the country, comprising 50.1 per cent of the 27,484,596 total.

They were followed by the Chinese (22.5 per cent), non-Malay Bumiputeras (11.8 per cent), Indians (6.7 per cent), and others (0.7 per cent).

Non-Malaysian citizens numbered 2.25 million or 8.2 per cent of the population.

Malays made up the highest proportion of the population in Terengganu (95 per cent), Putrajaya (94.6 per cent) and Kelantan (92.7 per cent).

The highest proportion of Chinese could be found in Penang (42.9 per cent) while the greatest concentration of Indians was in Negri Sembilan (14.3 per cent).

Seventy-one per cent of Malaysians now live in urban areas, compared to just 27 per cent in 1957 when Malaysia achieved independence.

In 2010, Malaysia also recorded 475,816 births, 17.5 per 1,000 population, versus 129,327 deaths or 4.8 for every 1,000 population.

Fertility rates were highest in the Bumiputera community at 2.6, down from 3.5 in 2000, while it fell to 1.5 from 2.6 among the Chinese and to 1.7 from 2.5 in the Indian community over the past decade.

Chief statistician Dr Abdul Rahman Hasan said the lower fertility rates could be explained by the growing number of women who are entering the workforce and increased access to contraceptives.

“When women participate in the economy, the age of marriage will go up.

“But more importantly, women can now make their own choice, contraceptives and so forth,” he said, adding that the average age of marriage for women was now 26.

Average life expectancy was 71.9 years for men and 77 years for women, with Chinese women boasting the highest life expectancy of any group, at 79.8 years.

Some 67 per cent of the population was aged between 15 and 64 while about five per cent of Malaysians were aged 65 and above.

Despite the increase in the proportion of over-65s, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop assured reporters that Malaysia was not an ageing nation.

“The international definition is more than seven per cent above the age of 65. And for us more than 65 we are only five per cent. So not yet; we’re still young and strong.

“According to our projections, we will be an ageing society only in 2025, after we have achieved Vision 2020,” he quipped.

Nor Mohamed added that fertility rates were projected to decrease slowly to the replacement rate of 2.1 in 2090, when the population of Malaysia is expected to peak at 57 million.

A river fish that has a craving for human genitals

A PIRANHA-like river fish that has been targeting fishermen's penises was discovered in the waters of Papua New Guinea. Sin Chew Daily reported that two local fishermen had bled to death after having their private organs bitten off by the fish's razor-sharp teeth.

An experienced angler from Britain said it was believed the killer fish had started biting humans due to a lack of “naturally occurring food”. Marine biologist Ian Middleton said the fish had the most human-like teeth on the bottom jaw he had ever seen.

He said the fish could have possibly fed on insects and might have detected a chemical change in the water before swimming up the urine trail and biting human genitals.

2012 : Wall St. Ten Brands That Will Disappear

24/7 Wall St. has created a new list of brands that will disappear, which includes Sears (NASDAQ:SHLD), Sony Pictures (NYSE:SNE), American Apparel (NYSE:APP), Nokia (NYSE:NOK), Saab, A&W All-American Foods Restaurants, Soap Opera Digest, Sony Ericsson, MySpace (NYSE:NWS.A), and Kellogg’s Corn Pops. (NYSE:K).

Each year, 24/7 Wall St. regularly compiles a list of brands that are going to disappear in the near-term.  Last year’s list proved to be prescient in many instances, predicting the demise of T-Mobile among others. In late May, AT&T (NYSE:T) and Deutsch Telekom announced that AT&T would buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion. The deal would add 34 million customers to the company and create the country’s largest wireless operator.

Other 201o nominees – including Blockbuster – bit the dust, while companies, such as Dollar Thrifty are on the road to oblivion. Last September, after finally giving in to competition from Netflix and buckling under nearly $1 billion in debt, Blockbuster filed for  Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In April of this year, Dish Network acquired the company for $320 million. Car rental chain Dollar Thrifty is still entertaining buyout offers from Avis and Hertz.  On June 6, the embattled company recommended that its  shareholders not accept Hertz’s recent offer, valued at $2.24 billion, or $72 a share.  Meanwhile, on June 13th, Avis Budget announced that “it had made progress in its discussion with the Federal Trade Commission  regarding its potential acquisition” of the company. Although Dollar Thrifty can remain choosy, a sale is a matter of when, not if.

We also missed the mark on a few companies.  Notably, Kia, Moody’s, BP, and Zales appear to be doing better than we expected.

As the year is coming to an end, the weather struck once more. Tropical Storm Washi hit the Philippines, killing more than 1,000 people.

And with the La Nina conditions still present, 2012 is promising to start just where 2011 left off.

As well as taking thousands of dollars worth of telecoms cable and copper wire, thieves are becoming more audacious - targeting public statues and war memorials in what has become a lucrative business.

The thefts include a piece of work by the celebrated sculptor Barbara Hepworth, that had been standing in a park in south London since 1970 and was insured for $800,000, which was stolen earlier this month.
