A reply to Human Right Party Malaysia.

A generation ago, the Malays, who started a civilization and governance here - the group of brown skins - sort of between the yellowness of someone of Chinese origin and darker ones of Indian origin, did sometime that is known today - putting in writing the definition of a "Malay".

Probably that's their practice ages ago, all doors was opened for anyone to become a "Malay". Because of this "openness" many claims that being "Malay" means one has no definite origin and all are aliens or "pendatang". That is sad, for it means, utterly not recognizing the existence of a local civilization and governance here.

The element that make a Malay so open is their common religion Islam. Though their school of thought is Shafie, that too becomes a non issue. A muslim of Indian or Chinese or Arabs or Pushtu or whatever origin who reside in "Tanah Melayu" or literally, MalayLand, which was later named Malaysia, practice the local culture here (should be case because they are here) are taken as Malays.

By that definition, a "Malay" is not a race anymore! Unlike even the "Arabs" - there are Arab Maronites and Arab Coptic Christians and many more. For generations, if the writer  Mr P. Uthayakumar; does not realize that, let me informed him, that students from the institutions you names have that Chinese, Indians, Pustu, Europeans look. Just look at RPK, Hishamuddin Rais, Hishamuddin Tun Hussain Onn, Anwar Ibrahim etc - They have one thing in common, they were MCKK students.

We would like to remind the writer,Mr P. Uthayakumar that the psychic of what happened in the Indian subcontinent has probably escaped the writers head ! Hasn't it? Indian subcontinent were divided into two countries - for Independence purposes! one India for Hindus (also known as Hindustan or literally means "HinduLand" ) and another Pakistan for Muslims. Due to religious affiliations, the Muslims in what is now India migrated to Pakistan and Hindus in what is now Pakistan migrated into India, then, though they are of the same stock. The are still a sizable Muslim minority in India (more than the numbers of Malay, here in Malaysia) and they are at times at logger head with the Hindus in India. Historically there are States in India with a majority Hindus governed by Muslims Sultans.

It is unfortunately that the colonialist had cause all that! We hope we are not hook-winked by

their slogans of human rights and freedom of speech bla..bla..bla.. They are the culprits that cause the partitioned of the Indian subcontinent into two Nations, Hindustan and Pakistan - the two have fought each other what, three major wars? And today waste their valuable resources in arm race and nuclear arms, some more - bent on wiping each other out of existence, what a shame! In the "mother of all democracy" - America, their African American is still fighting for a place under the sun and their American Indians (the Apaches, Sioux etc) (as oppose to Indian Americans) are sent to reservations and remains incognito to this day! That tells a lot about sloganeering...

As a result the tendency of an "Indian Malaysian" to think that being "Indian" necessarily means being Hindu! No my friend, Mr P. Uthayakumar not so. Please revisit the Indian history. We have "Indians muslims" in Malaysia of distinct sect Hanafis, these groups have their own mosques normally called "masjid India" at many places in Malaysia. Their kids have gone to those institutions you had cited including other lesser known Maahads and Madrassahs. Their distinct identity is because they assimilate less with the Malays.

I am Malay by definition, Islam by faith. According to my paternal grandma she is a Minangkabau, my paternal grandpa originates from Yunnan. On my mother side, his father has Turkish blood. So ... I am definitely a Malay. I hope you have no problems with that, we are here to live peacefully in this God given world and let us not kick each other in the groin.

Nearly 4.4 million yet to register as voters

Some 28 per cent of eligible voters–or 4.39 million Malaysians over the age of 21– have yet to register as voters as of the end of last year, Election Commission (EC) Deputy Chairman Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said.

Of the total, Selangor has the highest number at 787,000, followed by Johor (605,000), Perak (526,000) and Sarawak (473,000).

“Most of them, or about 65 per cent, are Malays and Bumiputeras of Sabah and Sarawak,” Bernama quoted him as saying. “From the registration forms we received recently, we found that more non-Bumiputera youths are registering as voters.”

Wan Ahmad said the EC would seek the cooperation of non-governmental organisations, youth organisations and other groups to inform the EC if they were organising events involving large numbers of people so that it could open voter registration counters.

“They can just contact us and inform us about their events. The EC will be very happy to open a counter there,” he said.

He also said that the EC would intensify efforts to register voters by putting up counters at shopping malls, participating in meet-the-client sessions organised by departments, going into the rural areas and appointing deputy registrars among political parties to register those qualified to be registered.

The public could also register as voters at 700 post offices nationwide, he said.

The EC would also seek the cooperation of the electronic media to encourage the public to register as voters, he added.

He attributed the situation to the attitude of the public who prefer to wait until the very last minute before registering as voters.

“Each time there is a general election, the EC receives at least a million application forms; so imagine the burden of certifying these applications within one or two months,” he said.

“When they cannot be registered on time, they blame the EC, when in fact they can register as voters throughout the year.

“The people should be aware that our election system practices a simple majority victory. A candidate can win even by a margin of one vote; so the voters have a huge responsibility in determining the future of our country,” he said.

US threatens sanctions over missing jets and church attacks.

SHAH ALAM: The United States may slap economic sanctions if the Umno-led Barisan Nasional government fails to resolve two key issues considered crucial by the international community, according to diplomatic sources.

The latest edition of the Pakatan Rakyat weekly, Suara Keadilan, quoting the sources as saying that the administration of President Barrack Obama (picture) is demanding a detailed explanation from Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s government on the two missing F-5E jet engines and the series of arson attacks on churches and other places of worship over the last two weeks.

It also quoted Wisma Putra sources as saying if Najib viewed these issues lightly then Washington could slap economic sanctions on Malaysia.

The United States is Malaysia’s number one trading partner and in recent years has been ranked among the top three foreign investors. In 2008, it was the second largest investor, with investments totalling RM8.7 billion.

Any economic sanction will have a painful effect on the country, which is already suffering from a large deficit.

Wisma Putra sources said Washington’s diplomatic note reflects the seriousness of the Obama administration, which until now had only voiced their objections with statements.

“After this, if the government still dilly-dallies and takes no serious move to resolve the issues, heavier pressure will be instituted, including economic sanctions,” said one source.

In an SMS revert to Suara Keadilan, the US embassy’s media officer, Tina Malone, said Washington took a serious view of media reports of the missing jet engines, which were manufactured in the US.

“The US Government views seriously reports of the missing F-5E jet engines supplied to Malaysia,” said the SMS.

“The US Government has asked the Malaysian Government to provide a comprehensive report in relation to investigations into the matter.”

One of the Wisma Putra sources also confirmed that Waashington had sent a diplomatic note to the Malaysian Government over the petrol bomb attacks and vandalism on Christian churches.

America’s fear was underscored by its Commissioner for International Religious Freedom, Leonard Leo, who said: “How the Malaysian leadership deals with this issue will determine the political and economic future of the country.”

I took the chance given to me to check in situ and for myself all the noise the media was spreading on Iran.

Siapa biayai PWTC? ANDALAH - buku Barry Wain

Sebuah buku yang menceritakan kehidupan dan politik Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, membuat satu tuduhan yang mengejutkan bahawa ibupejabat Umno - Pusat Dagangan Dunia Putra (PWTC) - dibiayai, sebahagiannya, oleh pembayar cukai.

Dalam buku bertajuk Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times, penulisnya Barry Wain menulis bahawa kerajaan telah "memujuk" bank-bank milik kerajaan supaya tidak menuntut jumlah pinjaman yang besar untuk membiayai projek tersebut.

Penulis, yang merujuk maklumat tersebut kepada wawancara pada 2007 dengan bekas menteri kewangan, Tun Daim Zainuddin, berkata bank-bank berkenaan telah melupuskan sekurang-kurangnya RM140 juta faedah terkumpul.

Menurut satu laporan sulit akauntan yang ditugaskan oleh Umno pada 1985, yang diperolehi oleh Wain, harga siap sepenuhnya PWTC ialah RM360 juta.

Laporan itu berkata, jumlah yang dibiayai melalui pinjaman ialah RM199.5 juta dari bank milik kerajaan 0 Bank Bumiputera Malaysia Berhad dan RM64.9 juta dari Malayan Banking Bhd.

Selain itu, laporan akauntan tersebut menyatakan bahawa sehingga Mac 1989, syarikat yang dilantik oleh Umno untuk membina bangunan itu, Khidmat Bersatu Sdn Bhd, hanya membayar faedah sebanyak RM51,570.

"Dan laporan tersebut... menyatakan dengan jelas bahawa syarikat tersebut tidak akan bayar apa-apa lagi," tulis Wain dalam bab lima bukunya itu yang bertajuk A Volatile Mix of Business and Politics.

Pemangku Raja imam solat hajat di stadium

Pernahkan anda melihat raja atau sultan mengimamkan solat bermakmunkan rakyat jelata, tentunya jarang sekali.

Kalau ada pun dahulu Sultan Johor pernah membaca khutbah Jumaat.

Lain pula di Kelantan malam tadi apabila Pemangku Raja, Tengku Mohammad Faris Petra mengimamkan solat hajat yang turut disertai ribuan rakyat Kelantan.

Menjadi makmun pada solat tersebut Menteri Besar, Tuan Guru Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, anggota-anggota Exco, Mufti, Datuk Shukri Mohamad, Ketua Hakim Syarie, Datuk Daud Mohamad, wakil-wakil rakyat dan pegawai kerajaan.

Program tersebut juga mencatat satu sejarah baru di Kelantan apabila kelihatan hampir semua ketua jajahan dan pegawai tadbir negeri hadir.

Sedangkan sebelum ini padang bola di Stadium Sultan Mohammad Ke IV hanya dipenuhi penyokong PAS dan Pakatan Rakyat menghadiri program solat hajat dan ceramah di situ.

Malam tadi suatu kelainan disaksikan sepanjang PAS menerajui Kelantan hampir 20 tahun.

Sebelum itu solat Maghrib diimamkan mufti dan Ketua Hakim Syarie pula mengimamkan solat Isya.

Biar pun kehadiran pada program itu tidak mampu menandingi program politik dianjurkan PAS dan Pakatan, namun suatu kelainan dirasakan apabila ia turut dihadiri Pemangku Raja.

Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz berkata, satu sejarah baru berjaya dicetus di Kelantan malam tadi apabila Pemangku Raja menjadi imam solat hajat memohon kesejahteraan sultan dan kehidupan rakyat.

“Sepanjang usia ambo lebih 75 tahun tidak pernah melihat ada Pemangku Raja yang menjadi imam solat. Biarlah kita mulakan usaha murni ini di Kelantan.

“Kalau sebelum ini kita lihat Ketua Polis Negeri menyampaikan khutbah lengkap dengan pakaian polis di mimbar Jumaat.

“Kesemua perubahan itu berlaku di Kelantan,” katanya melahirkan rasa gembira ketika menyampaikan kuliah ringkas pada majlis tersebut.

Since his birth, birthmarks in the form of Arabic script have been appearing on Ali's body. First, there were individual letters but then texts began appearing, the Russian-language Vesti news channel quoted his parents as saying on Thursday.

"First, there was a hematoma on his chin. When the bruise went off, we saw the word "Allah," Ali's mother Madina Yakubova said. Surprisingly, one of the baby's legs has an inscription, "Allah is the creator of all entities."

The TV channel reported that Ali was first diagnosed with "ischemic heart disease of the second degree" and "infantile cerebral paralysis" in the maternity clinic. However, after the inexplicable events began happening, he was examined again and found healthy.

The incident has been drawing hundreds of Dagestani Muslims to Ali's home everyday, prompting local authorities to guard the house round-the-clock Thousands have made the pilgrimage to Kizlyar in Russias Dagestan to view the islamic miracle. 

The region has been racked with violence from islamist in recent months. Local leaders have struggled to contain the violence perpetrated by islamic radicals against local authorities. In the midst of the armed struggle for control of the Caucasus region of Russia is Ali Yakubov. His home has become a shrine as over 2,000 people who arrive daily to get a glimpse of the rare islamic miracle. Local authorities wont verify the claim that Koranic verses appear on the babys leg. 

However, they do say that the belief is one of desperation. This baby has given them something to hold on to while they are living in the grip of terrorism.

PAS mengingatkan seluruh ahlinya agar tidak terlibat dalam mana-mana demonstrasi berhubung penggunaan kalimah Allah yang dianjurkan pihak tertentu di masjid-masjid atau di mana-mana tempat selepas solat Jumaat esok.


Naib Presiden PAS, Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man memberitahu, penganjuran demonstrasi membantah penggunaan kalimah Allah esok, bukan pendirian PAS namun yakin ianya adalah perancangan pihak tertentu khususnya Umno.

"Kita menyeru seluruh ahli PAS agar tidak terheret sama dalam demonstrasi yang didalangi Umno itu," katanya ketika menghubungi Harakahdaily.

PAS, jelasnya telah membuat pendirian jelas berhubung perkara itu melalui kenyataan Presidennya, Datuk Seri Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang selepas menyuarat khas lajnah politik parti itu, Isnin lalu.

Selain itu, katanya PAS telah membuat keputusan untuk menyatakan bantahan terhadap tindakan zalim kerajaan Mesir yang telah menghalang kemasukan pasukan konvoi Viva Palestina ke Gaza.

Sehubungan itu, semua ahli PAS diminta turun ke perhimpunan aman tersebut di hadapan bangunan Kedutaan Mesir di Kuala Lumpur, selepas solat Jumaat esok dan bukannya menyertai demonstrasi berhubung penggunaan kalimah Allah.

"PAS telah putuskan untuk membuat bantahan rasmi terhadap kerajaan Mesir esok, jadi kita seru seluruh ahli kita untuk bersama dalam himpunan di Kedutaan Mesir esok, bukan di tempat-tempat lain," katanya.

Dalam perkembangan sama, masyarakat bukan Islam turut diajak menyertai perhimpunan menyerah memorandum bantahan kepada kedutaan Mesir di Kuala Lumpur petang esok.

Viva Palestina convoy: Seven arrested, including Malaysian

More than 10 members of the Viva Palestina convoy were injured, four of them seriously, and seven members arrested by Egyptian police during a protest here on Tuesday at 11.40pm local time.

Among those arrested was a Malaysian, Ibrahim Mohd Azmi, a University of Bristol medical student who was a convoy volunteer.

The protest was staged by Viva Palestina convoy members to protest against the decision by the Eqyptian government to bar 59 convoy vehicles from leaving here for Gaza.

Egyptian police acted strongly against the convoy members three hours after the protest was staged at the entry and exit security point at this port.

Four members were seriously injured and had to be taken to hospital for further treatment.

More than 10 members sustained light injuries due to thrown rocks and tear gas.

Also arrested were three Britons, two Americans and a Kuwaiti.

According to witnesses, the incident was provoked by agents provocateurs of the Egyptian government. Earlier, the convoy members had gathered and formed a human wall to protest against the decision to disallow the 59 vehicles from leaving the port.

The Egyptians deployed 189 antiriot personnel equipped with water cannon and tear gas.

According to Viva Palestina leader George Galloway, there are negotiations at the highest level by Turkish authorities with the Egyptian government including for the release of all those detained.

At the time of this report at 4.10am local time, the situation was calm although observation and enclosure was still on by the Egyptian authorities.

The Viva Palestina Convoy is made up of 450 people from various countries with 220 vehicles in a mission to send humanitarian aid like food, medicines and school equipment worth more than US$1mil to Palestinians in Gaza.

The mission began in London on Dec 9 last year and has moved through various places in Turkey, Syria and Jordan.

The convoy was supposed to arrive in Gaza on Dec 27 but was held up by the Egyptian government which refused to allow use of the port of Nuweiba for entry to Rafah before arriving in Gaza.

As a result, they had to return to Syria to find another way to reach Rafah to go into Gaza.

Rata-rata gulungan ini dapat meneruskan kehidupan mereka hasil dari pemberian bulanan anak-anak mereka daripada sumber gaji anak-anak mereka itu. Terutamanya yang masih mempunyai anak-anak yang bersekolah dan memerlukan wang untuk tujuan murni menyekolahkan anak-anak mereka.

Saya syorkan agar potongan cukai dibuat (untuk kumpulan anak ini) bagi:

1. Sara hidup ibu-bapa

2. Penyaraan hidup adik-adik

(seperti potongan cukai saraan persendirian dan saraan anak-anak pembayar cukai)

Ini sekali gus memberi lebih peluang kepada anak yang bekerja membantu ibu-bapa yang daif dan adik-adik yang memerlukan tanpa memporak-peranda keadaan ekonomi sendiri/keluarga sendiri dengan teruk.

Ini juga insaAllah, akan meningkatkan ekonomi luar bandar dan membina kasih sayang kekeluargaan yang menjadi asas kepada keNegaraan.

Just like every year, Lebanese were preoccupied during the New Year's Eve with listening to the "predictions" of what "might" happen during the upcoming year.

Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea seems to be an "expert" in this domain. Two years ago, he predicted a number of explosions and assassinations in Lebanon and they actually took place.

And for the New Year, Geagea has "good news" for the Lebanese: an Israeli war within six months!

Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar quoted Geagea as telling Al-Jazeera TV crew that Israel will launch a fierce war against Lebanon in the upcoming six months.

According to the daily, Geagea said that the Israeli war would aim at "ending Hezbollah and its weapons."

Geagea claimed during the interview that Hezbollah is the reason of any potential war against Lebanon.

Kafir yang adil, Muslim yang zalim!

Salam Pencerahan!

“Janganlah orang-orang Mukmin mengambil orang-orang Kafir menjadi wali (Pemimpin) dengan meninggalkan orang-orang Mukmin. Barangsiapa berbuat demikian, maka lepaslah ia dari pertolongan Allah kecuali kerana (siasat) memelihara diri dari sesuatu yang ditakuti dari mereka…” (3:28)

Sebenarnya saya tidak benci mendengar Firman Allah ini. Tetapi saya begitu benci dengan segelintir para pembacanya. 

Mereka selalu menjadikan ayat ini untuk menolak seorang pemimpin Kafir walaupun dikenali khalayak sebagai seorang yang adil.

Mereka selalu menjadikan ayat ini sebagai tiket halal melantik seorang pemimpin Melayu yang Islam pada namanya sahaja. 

Inilah yang saya sedari dalam kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat di Selangor. 

Atas emosi dan kepentingan Melayu, seorang pemimpin PAS negeri itu sanggup menafikan hak seorang pemimpin Kafir yang layak untuk memangku CEO PKNS.

Sedangkan Tuhan sendiri mengarahkan Pesuruh-Nya menunaikan hak kepada pemegang kunci Kaabah yang Kafir disebabkan keadilan orang itu (4:58).

Kelmarin, saya mendapat tahu sekumpulan pemuda pula yang dipercayai dari PAS Kawasan Gombak pula beriya-iya mahu parti umat Islam itu keluar dari Pakatan Rakyat (PR) demi kepentingan Melayu, 

Sesungguhnya ia adalah suatu kezaliman Muslim yang tidak Islam. Mujur rakyat yang Islam dan tidak Muslim menolak desakan itu secara massa.

Supaya adil menafsirkan ayat 28 dari Surah Ali Iimran seperti di atas, maka masyarakat sekarang perlu terlebih dahulu menjadi masyarat Nubuwwah (era Kenabian).

Pada zaman Nubuwwah, orang yang Muslim betul-betul adil, sedangkan orang yang Kafir atau lebih tepat disebut Musyrik pula betul-betul zalim.

Di zaman sekarang, orang Muslim di antara adil-zalim. Begitu juga orang kafir, di antara yang zalim-adil.

Disebabkan demikian, kita boleh menemui pemimpin yang adil di kalangan umat Islam dan bukan Islam.

Disebabkan demikian juga, kita mendapati ada juga orang Kafir yang adil walaupun tidak menganut Islam; di kalangan masyarat Islam yang adil belaka.

Orang yang adil itu ada yang duduk di dalam Pas dan tidak kerana orang Kafir juga ada yang bersifat adil.

Begitu juga dengan orang yang zalim, sudah tentu ada di dalam Pas kerana orang Muslim juga ada yang berlaku Zalim.

Mungkin sebab itulah lahirnya Muallafatul Qulub atau Orang Kafir yang hatinya dan tindakannya dah dekat dengan Islam wujud dalam kamus kehidupan Umat Islam secara bernegara.

Untuk mengetahui lebih lanjut tentang kewajaran Kafir yang Adil ini, elok dirujuk dalam Fiqh Zakat oleh al-Imam Sheikh Dr. Yusof bin Abdullah al-Qaradhowi.

Kalau tidak salah dogma ini, mungkin kerana itu jugalah seorang Mujddid Islam, Badi’uzzaman Said Nusri pernah menyinggung, “Aku pergi ke Barat, Aku melihat Islam tanpa penganut…”

Adakah aliran spiritual kita sekarang telah lain, atau kita sebenarnya hidup pada zaman yang salah? – Yang Muslim benar-benar adil dan yang Kafir benar-benar zalim.

Elok kita kembali Hidup pada zaman Nabi, baru berhak kita berkata begini dan begini.

Elok juga kalau kita tidak terlalu mementingkan kedudukan asobiyyah Melayu yang selama ini diperjuangkan oleh Umno, kerana itu pun tidak ada paza zaman Nabi.

Kalau ada yang mahu berlaku zalim, elok dilihat sebagai Muslim yang zalim, kerana mudah untuk kita menolak mereka ini dalam Muktamar kita akan datang kelak.

Hadiah tahun baru, harga gula naik 20sen & harga roti naik

Rakyat mendapat hadiah tahun baru dari kerajaan apabila harga runcit gula dinaikkan sebanyak 20 sen sekilogram kepada RM1.65 di Semenanjung dan RM1.75 di Sabah dan Sarawak mulai 12 tengah malam ini.

Menurut kenyataan, kenaikan ini berikutan kenaikan harga gula mentah dunia.

Perkara tersebut diumumkan oleh Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri, Koperasi dan Kepenggunaan Datuk Mohd Zain Mohd Dom di sini hari ini.

2010: Of things unseen yet

The year is getting into its final sprint and 2010 is on everyone’s mind. So here’s a list of things likely to find space in our political pages with some prognoses.

Paying more for less, the GST comes along

The Bill will pass, and Malaysians will pay more with the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The Inland Revenue Department is still uncertain if income tax rates will drop with the introduction of the new system.

Even if there will be adjustments — though the quantum would be minimal — to our income tax rates to accommodate the GST levy, you can’t hide the fact that people still don’t like taxes. It is about the only thing that gets universal attention in a society when it comes to full effect.

It is a lose-lose for many. Those earning under RM2,500 who are now tax-exempt will find themselves taxed through their purchases. However, expect the interest levels to increase towards the end of 2010 as it becomes a reality for early 2011 — unless the opposition stirs up this hornet’s nest early and constantly.

Which is why BN looks at this issue quite gravely as it knows this is a “vote” landmine. You can blow up whole constituencies by placing burdens directly on the lower-income homes.

Many competent governments in the developing and developed world have lost power when they raised taxes, and competent is what the BN government is every other day.

The older deputy prime minister, not entourage material

Two quick things about Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. He has great clout inside Umno and does not aspire to be Tun Ghafar Baba — the docile number two of the 80s and 90s who just followed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Being 62 — seven years older than Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak — creates the urgency for him to set an agenda for his own political future. Equally, him being the de facto leader of Johor — the Number One Umno state — does ruffle Najib.

Muhyiddin’s justified to think the Education portfolio is a speed-bump for him, as such he’s unlikely to be faulted if he were to set some challenges for his party president.

Already in the BTN issue, it is clear Najib and Muhyiddin have different ideas about Malay leadership of the BN.

The dissent in the party might grow after a relatively quiet period since Najib’s takeover, but economic and power distribution issues are always present inside Umno and they will raise questions of leadership mantle in 2010

Anwar: Goes past Pall Mall, does not go to jail

A guilty verdict is improbable. Sending the leader of the opposition to jail will hurt Pakatan Rakyat substantially, but so will Malaysia get hurt in that scenario. There is too much international support for the Permatang Pauh MP and the nature of the charge makes First World and Islamic nations queasy.

2010 is not the year for the Najib administration to grapple with major foreign consternation.

The prevailing perception in and out of the country? Any adverse verdict for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is a conscious choice by the BN government even if the courts may claim independence.

Plus there is a sneaky suspicion the objective of the prosecution was to deflate the opposition’s confidence and its demands for more power following Election 2008. The sodomy allegations and ensuing drama did distract the nation and the Pakatan Rakyat parties.

Objective achieved, next year BN will have to move on.

PKFZ blown to bits here and there

The PKFZ has seen its first arrests, and more will follow in 2010. Billions of missing ringgit must show many fingerprints.

The real question is will the state sift through evidence to nab the bigger fish?

More information will emerge as those caught first will not be philosophical about the others who do get away. More will be implicated, but will the political will commensurate with the discoveries?

The likelier outcome would be the prosecution of those prominent enough but without present political capital.

One lawmaker, however, believes that a former transport minister will be brought in by the police, at least for questioning in 2010.

Nik Aziz — louder as he plans his departure?

Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat has never been more critical of his party men as he has been in 2009. More to come in 2010.

Suspicions are the spiritual leader of the party is setting an exit strategy for himself after a long distinguished service to the party and wants to set things right before he becomes only spiritual leader without a political role.

Nik Aziz demanded an EGM to remove the “trouble-makers” not too long after party polls. He has continuously rejected any compromise with Umno. But the Kelantan mentri besar has made up his mind and he will grow louder once the matter with his son-in-law Ariffahmi Abdul Rahman dissipates.

However, Nik Aziz won’t find it easy. The perpetual schism in the party — since intellectual honesty is lacking inside the leadership circle — of whether PAS is for Muslim rule or Malay nationalism is to be waffled through by the players.

2010 may end up being a frustrating time for Nik Aziz.

Teoh Beng Hock: Justice will be delayed

The inquest will end, and the public will be more convinced of foul play.

But where to next? This one is tricky, and the answer might be in prolonging the issue in terms of process until there is less interest in the case. That we get tired of the various twists and turns without an outcome.

This is probably the game plan for 2010 unless Najib decides to get a fresh electoral mandate in 2011. You don’t want proximity between the conclusion of the Teoh case to occur less than a year before polls. They made a mistake by asking voters their sentiments less than six months after the Bersih and Hindraf rallies, they would loathe a repeat.

An outcome in 2010 might mean a very interesting 2011.

MCA: My party my party, my party for an EGM

It won’t stop with an EGM happening or not. If anything the “political plays” employed by the various factions — trust me there are more than three — underlines only one certainty, that there will be more in 2010.

There will be departures from the party. When a fracture of the magnitudes we are witnessing occurs and the sides dug in with conviction, then there will be a winner and the losers must leave. It cannot be a case of reconciling.

That will lead to talks about BN-friendly options for the defeated or even a crossover, the latter being far less likely.

The proximity of the party to the PKFZ “situation” will add to the drama and cross-causalities bring in further casualties.

Makkal Sakti, still power to the people?

MIC, PKR, DAP, Gerakan, PSM and even IPF have a stake in the hearts and minds of the Indian labour class. Makkal Sakti party and Parti Reformasi Insan Malaysia are just extensions of the angst of a people for being displaced comprehensively in the only country they know as home.

No party drives the collective frustrations of almost a tenth of Malaysia, they merely ride it. Even the five who went to prison for the Hindraf rally — who must be honoured — did not shape the feelings of the people, they just led a feeling long seething, and still seethes.

2010 will not see a collapse of Indian support for the Pakatan Rakyat parties despite the emergence of a party named after the movement’s catchphrase. But it will see some of the contenders falling behind. The parties are unlikely to move closer based on shared aspirations, but the voters will move to one or the other. Look out for one of the new players and MIC slipping further.

Perak: Tired and bruised, but more to come

The BN government of Perak will not call for state elections in 2010 — no matter what the fellows before them endeavour.

But what will the Zambry administration do to get some breathing space finally? Both the BN and Pakatan blokes in the silver state are both pressed, however the strain would show more on the BN guys since they are trying to run a government while seeking legitimacy, with those they replaced screaming murder in the background.

2010 will not decide the political battle, but many watching will tire.

And at the end…

2010 might end up being the middle episode for a trilogy — just like 2009, for a possible climax of events in 2011-2012.
