Denmark Provides Indonesia US$10 Million Grant For Good Governance Drive

-- The Royal Danish Ambassador to Indonesia Borge Petersen announced a US$10 million grant from the Danish government, for good governance programmes in Indonesia, China's Xinhua news agency cited a local media as saying here on Wednesday.

When signing agreements with Indonesian institutions that promoting transparency and good governing reform here on Tuesday, the Danish ambassador said that the signing reflects Denmark's continuing support for promoting good governance in Indonesia.

"It represents just one more element in a long history of valuable cooperation between Indonesia and Denmark," the Jakarta Post quoted Borge as saying.

The Danish ambassador said that the grant would be used to finance programmes implemented from 2010 to 2013.

According to Borge, Denmark allocates 0.82 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) every year for development assistance programmes.

The allocation is above the limit set by the United Nations at 0.7 percent, he added.

Transparency International Indonesia (TII), Danish embassy's Indonesian counterpart, would use the funds to finance projects aimed at improving good governance and reducing corruption.

"Our main focus will be on capacity building, empowerment and involving public participation in implementing the local government budgets. We want greater participation from people at the grass root level," TII Chairman Teten Masduki said.
